Pirates Open Season At Tar Heel Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina University men's golf team will hit the links for the first time in the 2014-15 season beginning on Friday as the Pirates open play at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill. The 54-hole event is the first of five fall tournaments for the Pirates.
ECU returns eight letterwinners from last year's squad including juniors Wes Conover, Al Dickens and George Kilgore, all of whom played more than 30 rounds last season. This year's roster is comprised of six juniors, three sophomore and one freshman. There are no seniors on the team.
This week's tournament will feature a lineup with the aforementioned Conover and Dickens, along with junior Jacob Hicks, junior college transfer Nick Thompson and Tim Conover. Kilgore will play as an individual.
In addition to East Carolina, the three-day tournament field is comprised of Boston College, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Gardner Webb, George Mason, GRU-Augusta, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Mercer, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington and VCU.
The course is a par 72, with a total distance of 7,242 yards. The tournament will begin with 18 holes on Friday with players teeing off from both the first and 10th holes beginning at 8 a.m. The Pirates will play alongside players from GRU Augusta, Kennesaw State and North Carolina. Thompson will be the first Pirate to tee off at 8:50 a.m. followed by Tim Conover, Wes Conover, Hicks and Dickens in 10-minute increments. Fans can follow along with live scoring at Golfstat.com.
This marks the third consecutive season coach Press McPhaul will take his squad to the Chapel Hill course. ECU tied for sixth-place last season after finishing seventh in the 14-team field in 2012. Wes Conover turned in the team' best finish a year ago, tying for 23rd at 4-over par. Dickens and Kilgore also competed at the 2013 tournament.
