Pirates Move Into Second at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- East Carolina moved into sole possession of second-place Saturday during round two of the 2014 Tar Heel Intercollegiate being played at the Finley Golf Course near the campus of the University of North Carolina.
The Pirates fired a 5-under 283 during second round play to move to 7-under 569 for the tournament. Host North Carolina leads the second-place Pirates by 19 strokes at 26-under 550. The Tar Heels shot 11-under 277 on their home course.
Kennesaw State is in third-place at 6-under followed by GRU-Augusta (-4) in fourth with Furman and Maryland tied for fifth at 3-under.
ECU junior Jacob Hicks (70-69) is tied for fourth-place at 5-under 139 after shooting a 3-under 69 Saturday. Hicks sank five birdie putts to bring his total number of birdies for the weekend to eight. Hicks sits just three strokes back of individual leader Ben Griffin of North Carolina (-8, 67-69=136).
Freshman Tim Conover (74-70=144) recorded the Pirates' second-lowest round of the day with a 2-under 72. His older brother, Wes Conover, fired a 1-under 71 to move up three places into a tie for 16th at 2-under 144 (71-71). Senior Al Dickens (71-73), along with the younger Conover, is tied for 32nd at par-144 after carding a 1-over 73 Saturday. Junior college transfer Nick Thompson stands at 10-over 154 (78-76).
The Pirates will begin third round play Sunday morning at 9:40 a.m., teeing off No.1. ECU will play alongside North Carolina, Kennesaw State and GRU Augusta.
