Pirates Finish Tied For Second At Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team posted a 3-under par 861 (286-283-292) to finished tied for second-place at the 18-team Tar Heel Intercollegiate Sunday at Finley Golf Course near the campus of the University of North Carolina. Junior Wes Conover paced the Pirates with a sixth-place finish at 5-under 211 (71-71-69).
Conover ended the first round tied for 19th and steadily moved his way up the leaderboard. He carded a bogey-free round with three birdies and 15 pars Sunday and finished the 54-hole tournament with 39 total pars and 10 birdies.
Junior Jacob Hicks finished alone in 13th, tallying a 3-under 213 (70-69-74). Freshman Tim Conover (74-70-76) and senior Al Dickens (71-73-76) each carded a 4-over 220 to finish among an eight players tied for 38th. Junior Nick Thompson completed the tournament at 11-over 227 (78-76-73) and George Kilgore shot a 13-over 229 (76-80-73).
North Carolina led wire-to-wire, finishing 23 strokes ahead of the second-place Pirates and UNCG Spartans. The Tar Heels fired a 26-under 838 (273-277-288) with Ben Griffin claiming medalist honors at 10-under 206 (67-69-70). Griffin finished two strokes ahead of Furman Bryce Howell and Maverick Antcliff of GRU Augusta.
The Pirates will continue the 2014-15 season Sept. 21-23 at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate in Daufuskie, S.C.
