East Carolina To Host 2017 Women's Golf Regional
January 16, 2015 | Women's Golf
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina University has been selected as one of four host sites for the 2017 NCAA Women's Golf Regional, the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee announced Thursday afternoon. For the second time in school history, the three-day event will be played at the par-72, 6,348-yard Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, May 8-10.
"Once again we are extremely honored in being selected to host a NCAA Regional," ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "I really appreciate the athletics administration's support of our program through their efforts to bid on this event. It will be a great regional and I know the teams competing will be impressed with the involvement and coordination of this tournament by our university, athletics department and community."
In just their 15th year of existence, the Pirates have made 10 appearances in the NCAA Regionals dating back to the 2002-03 season, including a string of seven-straight (2007-present). ECU claimed its highest finish, ninth place, in 2009 to narrowly miss its first-ever NCAA Championship appearance by two strokes.
Former Pirate Adrienne Millican participated in the NCAA Championships as an individual in 2004 placing in a tie for 34th out of 126 golfers, while Lene Krog represented the Pirates at the championships as an individual in 2007 before withdrawing due to an injury after 36 holes.
"We want East Carolina to be known not only for winning championships but also for hosting championships," ECU Director of Athletics Jeff Compher said. "Therefore, we appreciate the opportunity to again host the NCAA Regional Women's Golf Championship in 2017. Making ECU and Greenville a destination for high level sporting events is a priority for our Athletics Department. We are grateful for our partnership with Ironwood Golf & Country Club and the support this event will receive from our entire community."
Joining the Greenville, N.C. Regional and East Carolina as hosts in 2017 are Albuquerque, New Mexico (University of New Mexico Championship Course, host: New Mexico); Lubbock, Texas (The Rawls Course, host: Texas Tech University) and Columbus, Ohio (Scarlet Course/OSU Golf Course, host: The Ohio State University).
Eighteen teams and six at-large individuals selections will participate in each regional with the six lowest scoring teams, as well as the three lowest scoring individuals (not on an advancing team) from each of the four regional championships advancing to the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships. The championship will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. with Northern Illinois University serving as the host for the first time.
"We are very pleased to be one of four hosting sites for the 2017 NCAA Women's Regional Golf Championships" Ironwood Golf Pro John LaMonica said. "Being chosen for this event is a testament to our Lee Trevino Signature Course design, the great work of our Superintendent, Danny Britt and his crew, the entire Ironwood staff and the enthusiasm of our membership.
"After hosting this event in 2010, our members and staff were anxious to host it again. All the teams were gracious guests and the golf was very competitive and exciting to watch. Kevin Williams, Lee Workman and the university helped us in preparing for a great event that our members, East Carolina University and the City of Greenville were proud to be a part of."
In 2010, the Pirates finished 12th out of 24 teams after posting a three-day, 54-hole score of 895 (31-over) and were led by senior Abby Bools, who missed making the NCAA Championships as an individual by three strokes, finishing tied for seventh with a score of 215 (1-under).
After a winter layoff, the Pirates (38-20) will return to action Sunday, Feb. 8 when they travel to Orlando, Fla. to participate in the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club, which is hosted by UCF.
