PHILADELPHIA -- The East Carolina women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw at Temple and earned one point in the American Athletic Conference standings on Sunday afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper Saundra Baron stopped a career-high 13 shots to preserve her eighth shutout of the year, as East Carolina (7-7-2, 2-3-1 AAC) moved its record to 2-0-2 in overtimes games this season. The last Pirate to make 12 or more saves in a match was Christiane Cordero in 2012 at Rice.
Temple (9-5-1, 1-3-1 AAC) was aggressive on the offensive end of the field for much of the first 45 minutes of action, outshooting the Pirates by a 9-3 margin in the first half. The Owls continued to get open looks at the opposing net, but Baron continued to turn away shots and keep the match even, despite ECU's difficulty getting into an attack mode of its own.
East Carolina's back line was challenged even more in the second half, but Baron was there to answer the call on five more shots, as the defense successfully cleared seven corner kick attempts by Temple as the match remained scoreless through 90 minutes of action.
In the 10 minutes comprising the first overtime period, ECU got off the only shot in the period, as neither side earned a corner kick and the match remained tied at zero.
The Owls showed a sense of urgency in the second overtime period, outshooting the Pirates, 4-0, and earning two corner kicks, but Baron continued to make stops and the back line was able to clear any scoring threats as the match concluded with no score after 110 minutes of action.
Temple outshot East Carolina, 18-5, overall and held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.
East Carolina will close its final road trip of the regular season when it travels to Cincinnati on Friday, Oct. 16. Opening kickoff against the Bearcats is scheduled for 7 p.m.
