LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Catherine Ashworth posted a final round 74 (2-over par) claiming a share of ninth place at the Cardinal Cup Tuesday afternoon for her first career Top 10 finish. The two-day event was being held at the par-72, 6,132-yard UofL Golf Club.
Ashworth, who equaled her career-low 54-hole score of 221, recorded 10 birdies, 32 pars during the and picked up wins over six players who have a top 100 national ranking according to GolfStat. The Fuqua Varina, N.C. native ranked among the tournament leaders in total birdies (t5th), par-4 scoring (seventh/4.10) and par-5 scoring (t8th/4.92).
Seniors Frida Gustafsson Spang (73-75-80) and Nicoline Engstroem Skaug (74-76-78) finished tied for 29th with tournament scores of 228. Sophomore Lisa Pettersson, who is ranked 69th nationally, claimed a share of 37th posting a score of 230 (75-78-77), while freshman Kate Law finished 61st with a score of 235 (79-83-73). Senior Lane Gakeler, who is participating as an individual, finished tied for 79th (78-80-91=249).
Host and No. 19 ranked Louisville (878) led wire-to-wire and capped off the event with a 6-over 294 claiming team honors and finishing nine strokes ahead of No. 33 ranked Florida State (889). Rounding out the top five were Chattanooga (895), Wisconsin (896) and Virginia Tech (897).
East Carolina, who entered the event ranked No. 26, finished seventh following rounds of 296, 302 and 302 for a 54-hole score of 900 (36-over). The Pirates did pick up a head-to-head win over No. 41 Illinois (903), who finished three shots behind ECU.
Columbia's Jacqueline Chulya (72-71-70) and Wisconsin's Brooke Ferrell (66-74-73) both shared medalist honors posting scores of 213 (3-under par).
ECU (51-7) will return to action on Feb. 7 when it travels to Orlando, Fla. to participate in the UCF Challenge, which well be played at the Eagle Creek Golf Club.
