GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina will host its first championship event as a member of the American Athletic Conference Saturday as the Pirates compete in the 2015 AAC Cross Country Championships at Lake Kristi in Grimesland, N.C.
The men's 8K race will take place at 10 a.m. ET, followed by the women's 6K race at 10:50 a.m. The awards ceremony will begin at approximately 11:40 a.m., following the completion of the women's race. Both races will be streamed live on the American Digital Network.
ECU last competed at the Wake Forest Invitational Oct. 16. The women placed eighth out of 17 squads and the men finished 10th. Junior Jorge Montes was the top runner for the men as he took 31st place. Classmate Caroline Reiser paced the women with a 10th-place individual finish.
The Pirates come into the championship meet with some momentum as they have improved throughout the fall season. Just a couple of weeks ago, East Carolina runners posted a total of 13 personal-best times at the prestigious Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa., despite cold and wet conditions.
The AAC men's championship meet will feature three teams ranked in the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association national and regional rankings. Tulsa, the defending conference champion, enters the meet ranked No. 13 in the national coaches poll. The Golden Hurricane is also ranked No. 2 in the Midwest Region.
In the women's meet, three teams enter the championship regionally ranked by the USTFCCCA. SMU holds the highest regional ranking of an AAC women's squad, ranking No. 3 in the South Central Region.
Following the AAC Championship meet, East Carolina returns to action Nov. 7 at the Three Stripe Invitational in Cary, N.C.
