Pirates Finish In 15th-Place At The Hayt

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The East Carolina men's golf squad closed play at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational with a 307 team round on Sunday to finish in 15th place at the tournament.
The Pirates finished with a three-round total of 938 at the star-studded tournament, which featured eight teams ranked among the top 40 in the nation. Eighth-ranked Texas claimed the team title with a score of 872, while No. 29 North Florida was second at 878. Oklahoma State, ranked 26th by Golfstat, placed third at 883, while 16th-ranked UCLA was fourth with an 885 and No. 18 Alabama was fifth with a final tally of 893.
ECU junior Wes Conover carded a 6-over 78 during his final round on the par 72, 6,976-yard course at Sawgrass¬ Country Club, finishing in a tie for 53rd-place in the individual standings with a 16-over par 232. Freshman Tim Conover, who also fired a 78 on Sunday, tied for 66th-place with a 20-over-par 236.
Junior George Kilgore tied for 68th-place after carding a 21-over-par 237, as did fellow junior Nick Thompson. Kilgore carded the Pirates' lowest round of the day with a 3-over-par 75. Junior Jacob Hicks rounded out the Pirates' five-man team with a 26-over 240 and finished tied for 73rd.
Beau Rossler of Texas earned medalist honors by shooting a 4-under-par 212 to post a five-shot victory.
East Carolina returns to the links March 9 at the General Hackler Championships at TPC Myrtle Beach at Murrells Inlet, S.C. The Pirates will play 36 holes on March 9 and an additional 18 holes the following day, March 10.
