Pirates Capture Second Place At Mission Inn Spring Spectacular

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The East Carolina men's golf team finished its strong showing at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular by shooting a 8-over 296 Sunday at the par-72 El Campeon course to secure a second place finish in the event.
The Pirates finished with a three round total of 19-over-par 883 (297-290-296) finishing 22 stroke behind tournament champion Virginia Tech at 3-under-par 861 (291-286-284). The Hokies were one of only two team in field ranks ahead of the Pirates by Golfstat with the other being NC State, which finished third at 24-over-par 888. ECU is No. 59 in the latest rankings with Virginia Tech standing 34th and NC State 44th.
ECU led the way with 51 birdies over the course of the tournament, with George Kilgore tying for the tournament lead with 17 birdies. Kilgore posted his second top 10 finish of the season as he closed out the tournament with a 4-over 76 to finish in sixth-place at par 216 (71-69-76). He recorded five birdies during the third round.
Wes Conover recorded his fifth top 10 finish of the season as he fired a 1-over 73 Sunday and a 3-over 219 (74-73-73) to tie for 10th-place. Conover led the 104-player field by shooting 3-under on the four par-3 holes.
Nick Thompson registered his first top 20 finish of the year with 54-hole tally of 7-over 223 (74-74-75) tied for 18th with teammate Al Dickens (74-77-72), who was playing as an individual. Freshman Tim Conover carded a 13-over 229 (78-76-75) to finish tied for 35th, while Jacob Hicks finished on stroke behind his teammate tied for 40th at 14-over 230 (82-75-73) as part of ECU's five-man roster.
Penn's Austin Powell claimed individual medalist honors with a 6-under 210 (72-69-69).
The Pirates will return to action March 27 - 29 at the Slomin Autism Invitational in West Palm Beach, Fla.
