ECU Drops To Fourth After Day Two Of AAC Championship

PALM COAST, Fla. - East Carolina is in fourth place after 36 holes of the 2015 American Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is taking place at the par-72 Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club.
The Pirates, which sat one shot out of first after opening-round play, posted a second round total of 295 (7-over par) and now are nine shots behind tournament leader UCF (291-287-537/2-over par).
Junior Lane Gakeler followed her 1-under par 71 on Sunday with a 1-over 73 during second round play and is tied for seventh at even par 144. She opened Monday's action with a pair of bogeys and seven pars on the front nine for a 2-over 38, but made ground up on the back nine shooting at 1-under 35.
Fellow classmate Nicoline Engstroem Skaug (146) is tied for 10th after 36 holes. The Oslo, Norway native opened her day with six-straight pars before bogeying the final three holes on the front nine for a 3-over 39. On the back nine, she carded eight pars and birdied the par-4 359-yard No. 15 for a round of 2-over par 74.
Senior Katie Kirk moved up 10 spots into a 16th place (147) with a 1-under par 71. Kirk fired 13 pars on the afternoon with a pair of bogeys (on front nine) and three birdies - all on the back nine.
Junior Frida Gustafsson Spang is currently tied for 22nd with a two-day score of 151 (7-over par). Spang had 11 pars, six bogeys and one birdie on her 5-over par 77 round dropping 12 spots in the individual standings.
Rounding out the Pirates roster is freshman Lisa Pettersson, who is tied for 35th with an 11-over par 155. Petterson pared her first five holes of the day before consecutive double-bogeys at the sixth and seventh holes. After birdies on eight and nine, she continued her solid play with six more pars before closing out the round with a 4-over on the last three holes finished with an 8-over 80.
UCF shot a second-round best 287 on Monday and currently leads the field with a two-round 2-over par 578 (291-237). Houston and SMU share runner-up honors at 586. The Cougars shot 289 and finished 10-over par (297-289), while the Mustangs tied the Knights with a second round low of 287 to finish 10-over (299-287).
SMU's Alexandra Rossi (70-71) and UCF's Monifa Sealy (70-71) currently share medalist honors in the individual race with a 3-under-par score of 141, while four players are tied for third. SMU's Jenny Haglund (74-69), Memphis' Michaela Fletcher (71-72), UCF's Ashley Holder (74-69) and USF's Ashley Burke (67-76) round out the third-place ties with 1-under par scores of 143. Haglund and Holder shot a second-round best 69 to tie for third-place honors.
The third and final round of the championship will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m. (ET). An awards ceremony and trophy presentation will take place shortly following the conclusion of the final round.
