Pirates Finish Seventh At American Men's Golf Championships

LeCanto, Fla. - East Carolina concluded play at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship Monday in seventh-place, finishing with a 17-over 881. The Pirates shot 1-under-par 287 over the final 18 holes, to move up one spot during the final round of competition.
USF dominated the 10-team field to win by 13 strokes over second-place SMU. The Bulls captured the title with a 27-under-par 837, while reigning champion SMU claimed runner-up honors at 14-under-par.
ECU junior Wes Conover and sophomore Jackson Spires each posted a 54-hole score of par 216 at Black Diamond Ranch. Spires fired a 3-under-par 69 Monday to move up from 21st to 14th, while Conover shot 2-over-par 74 to fall from sixth into a tie with his teammate. Spires sank four birdie putts in the final round, including four on the back nine.
Junior Jacob Hicks also turned in a final round of under-par for the Pirates with a 71. He was even through 13 holes before posting two birdies and one bogey on the final five holes to finish tied for 34th.
Fellow junior Al Dickens shot 1-over-par 73 during round three to finish alone in 39th at 11-over-par 227. George Kilgore shot 15-over-par 231 and finished tied for 45th.
USF's Ryan Fricker claimed medalist honors by two strokes over 2014 conference champion Bryson Dechambeau of SMU. Fricker carded an 11-under-par 205 to lead 13 players with three round totals of under-par.
Selections for the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships will be announced Monday, May 4, during Morning Drive on the Golf Channel. The show will also be streamed live on golfchannel.com. Teams will be chosen to play at one of six regional sites across the country. Regional play begins Thursday, May 14.
