Frida Gustafsson Spang Selected To Play In Raleigh Regional
April 27, 2015 | Women's Golf
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - East Carolina junior Frida Gustafsson Spang is one of six individual golfers that have been selected to participate in the Raleigh Regional of the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Regionals the NCAA Committee announced Monday night.
With her selection, Spang will participate in her third-straight NCAA postseason event and is the third player in program history to earn an individual bid joining Adrienne Millican (2004) and Lene Krog (2007), who both advanced to the NCAA Championships.
"I'm very proud of Frida's consistency this year," ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "She had a very good season, winning once and finishing in the top 15 in eight of the 10 tournaments, which is quite a feat. I feel good about her chances to advance to the National Championship as the course in Raleigh fits her game very well."
Spang has recorded eight top 15 finishes with six coming during the spring portion of the Pirates schedule. The Sweden native, who won individual medalist honors at the Minnesota Invitational in September, claimed a share of 13th place at the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 6-over par 222 (74-77-71).
On the season she owns a team-best 73.83 season stroke average that is currently tied for the fourth-lowest single-season stroke average in the Pirate annuals. As a freshmen she set the new school standard with a 73.50 average and last year her 73.80 stroke average was good enough for third all-time.
During her three years as a member of the golf team, Spang owns a 73.64 career average in 43 events, which is the lowest in school history. She has posted three career wins to go along with five top 5's, 12 top 10's and 22 top 20 finishes.
Although East Carolina had its string of seven consecutive at-large bids snapped, with Spang's selection the Pirates will be represented in NCAA Regional competition for the 13th-straight season in 15 years of the programs existence.
Four regional tournaments will be conducted May 7-9 to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition and all national championships policies apply.
A total of 384 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these players, 132 will advance to the championships finals. Six teams and three individuals will advance from each regional.
The national championships will be May 22-27 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, hosted by the University of South Florida. The Golf Channel will televise the final three days of the championship live.
