GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina cross country team begins the 2015 season Friday, Sept. 4 at the Covered Bridge Invitational hosted by Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
"We are looking forward to kicking off the season at the Covered Bridge Invite to get an idea of where everyone stands fitness-wise," Head coach Dan Lee explained. "The group is looking good in training so far, but a meet is obviously a little more serious than practice workouts.
"The men and women are working hard and seem to be coming together especially well," Lee continued. "This group has me really excited. I think that we'll be much better than last year, when it's all said and done."
The Pirates are looking to improve their performance from a year ago at the Covered Bridge Invitational after the women placed fourth and the men finished eighth.
ECU has a handful of returners leading the squad which is highlighted by All-American Conference selection Jorge Montes to guide the men and Caroline Reiser to pace the women's team.
Montes, a Tijuana, Mexico native, is coming off of a redshirt sophomore season in which he set the school record in the 5K and earned his first-career individual win at the Three Stripe Invitational after earning all-conference honors at the American Conference Championships with a top-10 finish.
Reiser is a junior who transferred to ECU in 2014 from FIU. She has turned in several strong performances during preseason workouts and looks to be a leader for the women's squad this weekend.
East Carolina will compete with host, Appalachian State, as well as Florida State, Florida, VMI, King University, Mars Hill and Lees-McRae in Friday's meet.
