Pirates Fall In Road Contest At Tulsa, 2-1

TULSA, Okla. - The East Carolina women's soccer team surrendered a go-ahead goal in the final 15 minutes and suffered a 2-1 American Athletic Conference road loss at Tulsa on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates outshot the Golden Hurricane, 9-8, in the first half, but Tulsa (7-6-1, 3-1 AAC) owned a 16-14 overall advantage in the match. ECU edged the home team, 6-5, in corner kicks and 10-9 in shots on goal.Â
Junior midfielder Rachel Renfrow scored her first-collegiate goal in her 47th-career match, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers made a season-high seven saves. Seniors Lana Spitler, Autumn Berry and Kelsey Reeves each recorded two shots on goal, respectively.
THE GOALS
19th Minute: The Golden Hurricane dominated the opening 15-plus minutes of the first half with several shots on goal, before Rachel Thun sent a feed into the box, where Valiree Morris kicked in a shot from approximately seven yards out to put Tulsa in front, 1-0.
41st Minute: The Pirates picked up the pace late in the first half when Jeffers lofted in a cross that was punched away by Golden Hurricane goalkeeper Rebecca Defer. Junior Taylor Gaunt collected the rebound and her shot was blocked by a defender, but Renfrow got the second rebound approximately 12 yards out and hit a shot into the back of the net to tie the match at one-all.
75th Minute: Tulsa reclaimed the lead with approximately 15 minutes left in regulation on accurate passing into the center of ECU's midfield where Thun touched a pass to Morris, who turned to her left and fired a shot approximately 20 yards out, off the left post and into the net to put her team back in front, 2-1.
MATCH NOTES
-Renfrow became the third player to score their first goals as a Pirate this season, joining freshman Megan Conte and junior Annah Lindberg.
-Gaunt's assist in the 41st minute was her first-career point.
-Tulsa missed a penalty kick chance in the 57th minute that hit the right post and went wide.

East Carolina (4-8, 0-3 AAC) will return home to host SMU (9-3-1, 3-0-1 AAC) on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in its Kick Cancer match. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and will receive $2 admission if they do so. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Johnson Stadium.
