As part of the Savannah Invitational, ECU will host Florida A&M Tuesday before facing Mercer in the semifinals on Friday (Nov. 25) and then squaring off against either Air Force or Akron in Savannah the following day. Other tournament teams include Radford and Georgia Southern.
The Pirates are coming off a 76-64 loss at Charlotte on Thursday, while the Hatters are fresh off a 116-112 loss to The Citadel on Friday. Five players scored in double figures for ECU at Charlotte with B.J. Tyson, Andre Washington and Raquan Wilkins leading the way with 12 points each.
Senior Caleb White is expected to return to the lineup Sunday after being forced to mis Thursday's game at Charlotte and freshman Jeremy Sheppard is likley to make his season debut.
NEWS & NOTES
- East Carolina and Stetson are meeting in a preseason tournament for the second consecutive season. A year ago, the Pirates took down the Hatters, 93-73, in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Invitational. B.J. Tyson led the Pirates with 22 points, while Caleb White and Kentrell Barkley added 14 points each.
- ECU is looking to extend its non-conference home winning streak to 15 games. It's last non-conference home loss was Nov. 16, 2014 to UNC Asheville (79-83).
- A win would tie coach Jeff Lebo with Tom Quinn (1966-74) for the most coaching victories in the school's Division I era (since 1965). Lebo has won 101 games steering the Pirates' ship.
- East Carolina has a total of 17 blocks in the first two games. It didn't record its 16th block of the 2015-16 season until the seventh game. JUCO transfer Jabari Craig leads the Pirates with five and Wake Forest graduate Andre Washington has four.
- The Pirates have won the rebounding battle in each of the first four games and have an overall rebounding margin of +8.7. They out-rebounded N.C. A&T by 14 (47-33) on Monday and Charlotte by nine (38-29) Thursday.
- B.J. Tyson has gotten off to a much better start in 2016 than he did a year ago. Through the first three games last season was averaging 8.0 ppg, without any double figure scoring games, and shooting 12.0 percent (3-25) from the floor. Although he is shooting 30.6 (11-36) from the field, he has scored double figures in every game, while in the process of moving from shooting guard to point guard.
- ECU enjoyed a decisive advantage at the free throw in the first three games. The Pirates has made more free throws (54) than their opponents have attempted (34). The trio of B.J. Tyson (12), Jabari Craig (10) and Kentrell Barkley (8) have made nearly as many foul shots between the three of them (30) as the opponents have combined.
