
ECU Sits In Eighth After 18 Holes At Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The East Carolina women's golf team posted an opening round 293 (9-over) at the Hurricane Invitational and currently sit in eighth place. The three-day event is being held at the par-71, 6,061-yard Biltmore Golf Course.
Senior Frida Gustafsson Spang led the Pirates (62-11-2) in the first round of play posting an even score of 71 (34-37) and is currently in an eight-way tie for 11th place. The Kinna, Sweden native shot a one-under on the front nine with three birdies, while carding eight pars and one bogey on the back nine.
Freshman Catherine Ashworth (73, 2-over) is tied for 26th, while senior Nicoline Engstroem Skaug (74, 3-over) holds a share of 35th. Ashworth tallied three birdies and five bogies to go along 10 pars. Skaug struggled early in her round with bogeys on two of her first three holes, but rebounded with a birdie on the par-4, 347-yard fourth hole closing out the front nine at 1-over. On the back, she bogeyed holes 14 and 16 to finish 2-over on the back nine and 3-over on the day.
Freshman Kate Law and sophomore Lisa Pettersson both finished their rounds with a 4-over 75. Law had three birdies, three bogeys, a pair of doubles and 10 pars on Monday. Pettersson birded two of her first six holes on the front nine before posting five bogeys in her final 12 holes.
Seventh-ranked Northwestern (7-under) leads the field following an opening round 277. Iowa State, who is ranked 16th nationally, is four shots behind at 281 (3-under) with USF sitting at 285 (1-over).
Second round action begins Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. (EST).
