Spang Tied For Eighth At UCF Challenge

ORLANDO, Fla. - East Carolina senior Frida Gustafsson Spang carded an opening round 73 (1-over) at the UCF Challenge and currently sits in a four-way tie for eighth place. The three-day event is being held at the par-72, 6,349-yard Eagle Creek Golf Club.
Spang opened the day with a birdie on the first hole and shot a 2-over 37 on the front nine. At the turn, she pared the 10th hole before registering her second birdie of the day on the par-3 11th - finishing with a 1-under 36 on the back nine.
Freshman Catherine Ashworth posted a 4-over 76 shooting 38 on the front and back nine, which included birdies on the sixth and 16th holes and is tied for 22nd. Sophomore Lisa Pettersson is tied for 59th after shooting a 7-over 79.
Rounding out the Pirates roster are senior Nicoline Engstroem Skaug and freshman Kate Law, who are both sit in a share of 70th with scores of 81 (9-over).
In team play, Houston grabbed the first-round lead at 7-over (295) while Texas is four shots back at 299 (11-over). Iowa State, Missouri, and Augusta are all tied for third at 301 (13-over). East Carolina is tied for 11th with Vanderbilt after posting an opening round of 309 (21-over).
Missouri's Michelle Butler and Tulane's Emily Penttila are tied atop the individual leaderboard at 1-under (71). Five players are tied at even par with four more just two-shots back at 1-over.
Second round action is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Pirates teeing off at 10:09 a.m.
