PALM COAST, Fla. - East Carolina sits tied atop the leaderboard after the round one of the 2016 American Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships Sunday at the par-72, 6,225-yard Hammock Beach Ocean Course with senior Frida Gustafsson Spang holding the individual lead.
The Pirates are tied with Memphis for the team lead at 21-over-par 309 with SMU, UCF and USF tied for third at 23-over 311. Cincinnati is seven strokes back of the leaders in sixth-place at 28-over followed by Houston (+31), Tulane (+33) and Tulsa (+41).
Spang carded a first round score of 1-under 71 and led the field with 14 pars and four birdies. She was 1-over at the turn but then sank three consecutive birdies to drop to 2-under through 12 holes before a bogey on 13. Spang finished the round by paring the final four holes.
"I'm very proud of our team, especially our seniors for battling hard in some extremely tough conditions today," ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "The winds were very high and gusty, so Frida's round was really good in those conditions."
Senior Nicoline Engstroem Skaug is tied for eighth at 4-over-par 76. Lisa Pettersson is tied for 15th after shooting a 7-over 79 with Catherine Ashworth tied for 30th at 11-over 83. Kate Law rounds out the Pirates' roster with a 14-over 85, tied for 37th.
Cincinnati's Valentina Herrera is in second place at par-72 (E), while Memphis' Emily Goldenstein, SMU's Brigitte Dunne and USF's Nicole Autrique are tied for third overall at 74 (+2).
The Pirates are back on the course tomorrow morning at 9:40 a.m. to tee off for round two of The American Championships.
