Skaug And Spang Record Top 10 Finishes

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - The East Carolina senior duo of Frida Gustafsson Spang and Nicoline Engstroem Skaug both recorded Top 10 finishes at the Bryan National Collegiate posting scores of 223 and 224 respectively. The three-day, 54-hole event was being held at the Bryan Park Champions Course.
Spang fired a final round 2-over 74 finishing seventh after collecting seven pars and five birdies to go along with five bogies and one double bogey. The Sweden native registered her seventh top 10 and eighth top 20 placement of the season. For her career, she now has 18 top 10's and 30 top 20's. During the event, she led the field in par-3 scoring (2.75), while ranking among the tournament leaders in third in total birdies (10) and 13th in par-5 scoring (4.92).
Skaug posted her second top 10 of the season taking eighth with a final round of 76 (4-over). The Norway native, who now has four top 20's this season, had four birdies, six pars and eight bogies on the weekend and stood among the leaders in total birdies (t1st/11), par-5 scoring (t2nd/4.75) and par-3 scoring (t3rd/2.92).
Rounding out the Pirates roster were underclassmen Catherine Ashworth (t40th/233), Kate Law (t51st/236) and Lisa Pettersson (t60th/239). Senior Lane Gakeler finished 82nd after a tournament score of 260 as an individual.
No. 28 Virginia repeated as tournament champions with a score of 888 (24-over) finishing six stokes ahead of No. 38 South Carolina (894/30-over). Twenty-first ranked Florida State (896/32-over) took third followed by No. 49 Wake Forest (901/37-over), No. 30 Notre Dame (909/45-over), Kentucky (909/45-over) and No. 28 East Carolina (910/46-over). The tournament featured 15 teams, including 10 ranked in the national top 50.
"We struggled all weekend in the wind on a tough course," said ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We didn't play as good as we have all spring, but real proud of how we fought and were just one shot out of fifth place. Picked up four wins over top 50 teams, which were big for the program as we head down the stretch of our schedule. Really proud of Frida and Nicoline, who both had top 10 finishes."
South Carolina's Sara Schmelzel took home medalist honors with a 3-over 219.
East Carolina (104-28-2) will return to action on Saturday, April 9 when it participates in the River Landing Classic, which will be held in Wallace, N.C. at the River Landing Club.
