July 05, 2016 | Women's Golf
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- The East Carolina women's golfing quartet of Catherine Ashworth, Kate Law, Nicoline Engstroem Skaug and Lisa Pettersson have been named 2015-16 Division I All-America Scholars, according to an announcement by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).
With Pettersson and Skaug selections, it marks the 12th-straight year that at least two Pirates have been named All-America Scholars in the same year (2005-present).
"I'm very proud of the excellence from our team in the classroom this year with Nico, Lisa, Catherine and Kate leading the way for this success," said ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams. "These four young ladies being named WGCA All-America Scholars is an extremely high honor for our program. Nico has worked very hard to raise her cumulative GPA above the threshold needed her sophomore year and maintaining this standard for her final two years.
"Lisa has been very successful her first two years in the program balancing the rigors of being an honor student and an all-conference golfer. Catherine and Kate did a great job in following the high standards academically and athletically we have in our program."
Ashworth completed her rookie season for the Pirates participating in 12 events where she posted a 76.33 scoring average to rank fourth on the team. The Fuquay Varina, N.C. native recorded three top-15 and five top-30 finishes, which included a career-best ninth placement at the Cardinal Cup after posting a 5-over 221. She posted 12 rounds of 75 or better with a career-low 72 during third round action at the Pinehurst Challenge. In the classroom, Ashworth is a two-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member majoring in business with a concentration in marketing.
Law posted a 76.97 scoring average in 12 events as a freshman to rank fifth on the club during the 2015-16 season. The Maryborough, Australia native recorded a pair of top-25 finishes including a share of fifth place at the Pinehurst Challenge in just her third collegiate event posting a personal-best 5-under 211. In all she registered 12 rounds of 75 or better with a season-low 69 coming during second round play at Pinehurst. Off the course Law is a two-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member majoring in business management.
A unanimous All-American Athletic Conference selection, Pettersson finished second on the team with a 74.67 stroke average, which ranks ninth on the all-time single-season charts. The Taby, Sweden native tallied four top-5 finishes, five top-10 and seven top-20 in 12 events. She started her sophomore season claiming three consecutive top-11 finishes which included a personal-best share of second at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate (2-under, 214). Pettersson closed out the year claiming a pair of top-5 finishes in her last three events (River Landing Classic and the American Championships). A two-time WGCA All-America Scholar, a four-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member and 2015 American Athletic Conference All-Academic selection, Pettersson is pursuing her undergraduate degree in economics.
Skaug closed out her senior season sporting a 75.11 stroke average while claiming a pair of top-5, four top-10 and six top-20 finishes. During her four-year career at ECU, she recorded a 74.87 average ranking second all-time behind classmate Friday Gustafsson Spang (73.31). Skaug recorded one win (2013 Conference USA Championship), five top-5, nine top-10, 19 top 20 finishes in 44 events and was a two-time all-conference performer. The Olso, Norway native is a three-time WGCA All-America Scholar, seven-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll, 2014 Conference USA Honor Roll, 2015 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and 2016 PCS Phosphate All-Scholar selection.
