GREENVILLE, N.C. – With one meet under its belt, the East Carolina track and field program heads to Virginia Tech this weekend for the Hokie Invitational.
Â
The competition begins at noon Thursday at the Rector Fieldhouse, with events starting at 11 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Admission is free.
Â
"We are very excited to get the second meet in for the indoor season," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We felt like we had a pretty decent weekend in Chapel Hill to open the year. Now it's time to turn it up a little bit and run against some great competition. The competition that we will see this weekend is schools from the ACC and other very good conferences."
Â
Along with the Pirates and host Hokies, Duke, NC State, Radford, Coastal Carolina, Charlotte, East Tennessee State, VCU, Hampton, Marshall, North Carolina A&T and Florida will compete at the event. The Gator men are ranked No. 1 nationally this week while the Virginia Tech men are No. 16. On the women's side, NC State checks in at No. 16.
Â
At last weekend's season-opening meet, juniors Mohogany Baker and D'Ante Yarborough won their respective events in the weight throw and 60-meter hurdles in helping ECU to a third-place team finish at the competitive Carolina Cup.
Â
Sophomore Stefano Migliorati enters the weekend as the American Athletic Conference leader in the 800m as he ran a 1:53.02 (converted time) to also rank 44th nationally in Division I.
Â
"I told both of our teams that we have to come into this weekend with a little bit more focus than we did last weekend," Kraft added. "Our sport is all about being 100 percent focused on individual events. If we compete hard, I think we'll have a great weekend."
