
Pirates Sweep Dual Meet With UMBC

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina Swimming & Diving Teams swept a dual meet from UMBC Saturday at Minges Natatorium in what was the final home meet for head coach Rick Kobe, who is retiring at the end of the academic year.
The ladies topped the Retrievers 166.5-131.5 to improve to 6-2 overall and the men posted a 178-117 triumph to improve to 5-1.
East Carolina won 25 of the 32 events held Saturday, including a sweep of the top-2 places in 10 events.
"We swam lights out and beat a very good team today," Kobe said. "It was pretty emotional, but I was ready for it. It was great to see a full house and a lot of the alumni come back today."
Senior Marion Abert earned three individual first-place finishes on the ladies side, capturing the 200, 500 and 1000-yard freestyle, and also swam lead-off for the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team. She won the 500 free by more than four seconds with a time of 5:04.72 and the 1000 by nearly 10 seconds with a mark of 10:10.99. Her triumph in the 200 was slightly closer as she edged teammate Tori Angermeier by 1.44 seconds with a time of 1:52.41.
Angermeier won a pair of individual events herself, touching 0.27 seconds in front of teammate Victoria Gillet in the 100-yard butterfly (57.91) after winning the 100-yard freestyle (52.37) by 1.13 seconds over UMBC's Allie Caulfield.
Julie Lajoie was also a multi-event winner, claiming first-place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.50) by 2.21 seconds over Gillet and the 200-backstroke (2:02.02) by 1.88 seconds over UMBC's Aleshia Knight. Lajoie took second in the 200-yard IM as well.
Senior Erle Craven and John Myhre each recorded a pair of individual wins on the men's side.
Craven led ECU to a sweep of the top-3 spots in 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. Craven touched first in each event, edging out senior Will Hicks by 0.03 seconds in the 100 with a time of 56.21. Andrew Queen took third in the 100 and placed second in the 200. Josh Parmenter claimed third-place in the 200.
Myhre was victorious in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle. His mark of 1:41.02 was 1.17 seconds better than the runner-up.
Manny Alvarez (1000 free), Boleck DePawlikowski (200 back), Fran Krznaric (200 IM), Gustavo Santos (100 fly) and Tristan Taylor (100 back) also earned first-place finishes for ECU.
In the diving well, senior Ashley Sams won both the women's 1-meter and 3-meter competition, posting a personal-best on one meter with a score of 282.52. Alicia Roueche was second with a score of 252.52. Sams won the 3-meter event with a score of 279.00 while Roueche placed second with a score of 269.17.
On the men's side ECU went placed one, two and four in both events. Taylor Berkey won his first ever dual meet with a score of 284.92 on the 3-meter springboard. Matt Mullen took second with a score 271.50, and senior Zach Duval was fourth. Berkey also won the 1-meter competition with a personal-best score of 277.42 followed by Duval in second with a score of 263.10 and Mullen in fourth.
The Pirates return to action Friday, Jan. 27, at the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational in Columbia.
