The Rundown: Game One
Red Flash senior RHP Ethel Santai tossed a perfect game and the Saint Francis bats backed her up with 11 runs of support in the five-inning contest. The Pirates made the defense work behind her as Santai recorded just one strikeout. Cheyenne McKee paced the Red Flash offensive outburst with two hits, two runs scored and three RBI.
Â
Sophomore RHP Mary Williams (3-7) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in two innings pitched. Freshman Abigail Umphlett also made her collegiate debut in the circle, giving up five runs on seven hits in two innings of work.
Â
The Decisive Inning
Saint Francis scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first. After Madison Cabell led off with a double, Kassidy Troxel reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners. Kelsi Marconi then deposited a 1-2 pitch into left center for a two-run double before Cheyenne McKee smashed a three-run home run to left field to extend the Red Flash advantage to 5-0. Sierra McKee tacked on a RBI double for good measure to leave SFU with a 6-0 edge after two complete.
Â
Statistics of the Game
Santai needed just 51 pitches to complete the perfect game. She also threw first-pitch strikes to 11 of the 15 batters she faced.
Â
The Rundown: Game Two
ECU rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the fifth inning and hung on late to record its first true road win of the season in an offensively charged affair against Texas Tech.
Â
Junior infielder Meredith Burroughs supplied a good chunk of the offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI and a home run. Redshirt junior catcher Alex Mycek and senior outfielder Ali Ramirez also went yard to increase East Carolina's season home run total to an American Athletic Conference-best 36. Susan Welborn was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, two RBI and a home run to pace the Red Raider offensive efforts.
Â
Burroughs (2-0) notched her second victory of the year in the circle, tossing 1.1 effective relief innings. She did not allow a run while walking a batter and striking out one. Williams was credited with the save after throwing the final three frames, giving up three runs and recording three strikeouts against no walks. Cheyene Powell (1-2) was the losing pitcher after coughing up three runs on three hits in just one third of an inning.
Â
The Decisive Innings
With the Pirates trailing 4-2 in the top of the fifth, senior infielder Megan Quick worked a four-pitch walk and moved to second on a Ciara Ervin sacrifice bunt. Senior outfielder Kacie Oshiro followed with a single through the left side and crossed home plate on a single to left center by Burroughs. Mycek then cleared the bases, getting hold of an 0-1 pitch and sending it sailing over the left field fence for her 10th home run of the campaign to make the score 6-4 in favor of ECU. Ramirez then dropped a 1-0 offering over the wall in left center to leave East Carolina with a 7-4 edge heading to the home half of the frame.
Â
A big insurance run in the top of the seventh, a Burroughs RBI double, set the stage for the Texas Tech attempted heroics. Welborn delivered a RBI double to left field with two outs before Kassidy Scott scored two on a single to left center that pulled TTU to within 8-7. Williams short circuited the rally though, inducing a grounder to third off the bat of Kiana Workman to end the contest.
