CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The East Carolina women's golf team was one of 25 teams recognized Thursday by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) for having a collective GPA of 3.840, which ranked sixth nationally. This marks the second-straight academic year the Pirates were ranked among the Top-10 in the nation – their highest ever standing.
This is the sixth time in program history that the Pirates have garnered a Top-25 ranking following the 2007-08 (21st/3.531), 2010-11 (18th/3.658), 2013-14 (25th/3.635), 2014-15 (14th/3.66) and 2015-16 (3.768/10th) seasons. The Pirates are joined in the Top 10 by American Athletic Conference member Cincinnati, who comes in ninth.
"I'm extremely proud of our teams performance in the classroom this past year," said ECU Head Women's Golf Coach Kevin Williams. To rank among the best programs in the county for the second-straight year (Top 10) and sixth time over all (Top 25) is a huge accomplishment.
"I wasn't sure our team could top the performance in the classroom from last year, but we not only beat it, but blew it away with the 3.840 Team GPA this year! Amazing what expectations and standards do for a program. It is the expectation of our team each year to achieve high marks in the class. Those expectations come from the standard set by the teams in the past and fuel the passion of our team members to achieve at the highest possible level in the classroom. To be able to accomplish this while being competitive nationally makes me very proud of each member of our team. We could not achieve this without the wonderful support and guidance we receive from our student development office especially Erica Banning."
The Jacksonville University women's golf team has been honored as the recipient of the 2016-17 WGCA All-Scholar Team GPA Award. The award recognizes the women's collegiate golf program with the highest collective average team GPA, which includes all of the team's student-athletes for the 2016-17 academic year. Jacksonville's six-member team had an average GPA of 3.924.
Earlier this month Catherine Ashworth, Carley Cox, Dorthea Forbrigd, Kate Law, Lisa Pettersson and Siranon Shoomee were named 2016-17 NCAA Division I All-America Scholars by the WGCA. The Pirates also took home The American Team Academic Excellence Award for the second consecutive year.
The WGCA, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The WGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the WGCA represents over 500 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
