"I am thrilled to announce the hiring of Dan Ruyle as our Assistant Men's Golf Coach at ECU, Sapp said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our players having been a head coach for 15 years. He also adds continuity to our staff as he worked for me the past two years and we know we work well together. Dan is passionate for his players and incredibly enthusiastic. I am fortunate to have him join me and our players will soon find out how fortunate they are to have him join Pirate Nation!"
Ruyle comes to ECU after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina the previous two seasons under Coach Sapp following a 15-year stint as head men's and women's golf coach at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
"I would like to thank ECU and Coach Sapp for welcoming me aboard as part of the Pirate Family," Ruyle said. "I am really excited to continue working with Coach Sapp. Our many years of head coaching experience will be a tremendous asset to the student-athletes in the men's golf program. I know we have a very talented group of guys and I can't wait to start the process of helping these young men become the best golfers and people possible."Â
Ruyle led the SU Pirates to eight NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, including three straight with the men from 2013-15. The women's team qualified for the NCAAs five consecutive seasons from 2006-10 while finishing in the top-5 from 2007-10, including a third-place finish in 2008.
Ruyle's teams won five conference championships and he was named coach-of-the-year four times. The women's team won four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) titles, including three in a row from 2007-09, and the men shared the conference title in 2010.
After the women won their second-straight SCAC championship in 2008, Rule was tabbed the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Great Lakes Coach-of-the-Year.
During his 15 years at Southwestern, Ruyle instructed eight All-Americans, including three first-team selections along with 11 all-region players and 43 all-conference honorees. Fourteen of his student-athletes were recognized as All-America Scholars.
He was a member of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Committee from 2000-06, serving as chairman his final years on the board.
Prior to becoming a collegiate coach, Ruyle was the assistant golf pro at Wildflower Country Club in Temple, Texas for three years. He competed professionally in the 1998 and '99 Assistants Winter Tour as well as select Northern Texas PGA section events.
Ruyle earned his bachelor's degree from West Texas A&M in 1997 and was a two-year letterman on the men's golf team. Â
