GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU women's soccer team (5-3-2, 0-1 AAC) welcomes UCF (4-1-1, 0-0-1 AAC) to Johnson Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m. The Pirates look to bounce back from Thursday night's loss to USF in the American Athletic Conference opener. The Bulls scored in the 89th minute on the way to handing ECU its first home loss of the season.
Â
Courtney Cash leads the Pirates with five goals and two assists for a team-best 12 points. She was named AAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday and was joined by Michelle Newhouse (Goalkeeper of the Week) and Kim Sanford (Defensive Player of the Week) forming the first trio of Pirates to earn AAC weekly accolades in the same week since ECU joined the league.
Â
The Pirates' defense has posted four shutouts this season and held No. 5 Virginia to one goal in a double-overtime draw against the Cavaliers. Newhouse is 4-3-2 in goal with a 0.85 goals against average and 37 saves.
Â
UCF has the fourth-highest RPI in the country. The Knights' only loss this season is to No. 4 South Carolina on the road in the season opener. UCF is 4-0-1 since its loss to the Gamecocks and has had two matches cancelled due to Hurricane Irma; the road match versus LSU that was also effected has been rescheduled for Oct. 15. The Knights' biggest win of the season came on Aug. 25, when they stunned No. 4 North Carolina 2-1 at home. Dina Orschmann and Morgan Ferrara each have a pair of goals this season while four other players have tallied a goal. Vera Veris is 2-1-1 in goal for UCF and has made 10 saves in 350 minutes while allowing two goals for a 0.52 goals against average. UCF started the AAC season with a 0-0 draw at Cincinnati on Thursday night.
Â
Last time the two met, UCF defeated ECU 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 23, 2016. The Knights lead the all-time series 2-10-2 and 2-1-1 at Johnson Stadium.
