Pirates Wrap Up Play At ITA Regionals
October 15, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Cary, N.C. – Competing against the best teams in the Carolina region, the ECU men's tennis team saw five of its singles players and all three doubles teams win at least one match this weekend at the ITA Carolina Regional Championships.
"I thought overall, the tournament was great," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "The more we can compete and compete well against some of the better teams in our region, the better we will get. Little by little, we are seeing our guys get better this fall which shows us we are on the right path. A big congratulations to Diogo for his play this past weekend, after his loss in the first round, he had a great run in the consolation."Â
Leading the way in singles for ECU was Diogo Marques. The freshman from Setubal, Portugal dropped his opening singles match to Charlotte's Ben Wayand, but was unbeatable afterwards. In the first round of the consolation draw, Marques beat App State's Ben Webster in a tight three-set match that included a pair of tiebreakers. He then rattled off straight set victories over Clemson's Michael Agee, NC State's Michael Ogden and Wake Forest's No. 74-ranked Yuval Solomon to finish 4-1 for the weekend.
Wisse Jonker was the first Pirate to get a win over the weekend. Jonker advanced out of the first round after defeating Charleston's Easton Thomas, before falling to South Carolina's Yance Dennis in the second round. Javier Renones, Simon Labbe and Vlad Anghel all dropped their first round matches, but bounced back to win in the first round of the consolation draw.
In doubles, Ronny Georgi and Wisse Jonker teamed up for the first time this fall and won their opening round match against Olly Cull and Charlie Morkel of UNC Asheville. The pair bowed out in the second round after losing a three-set match to South Carolina's Patrick Cacciatore and Beau Pelletier.
The other two Pirate duos, which consisted of Labbe and Renones as well as Anghel and Marques, each lost their first round matches. But both Pirate tandems won in the consolation draw to ensure all three ECU doubles teams earned 1-1 records at the regionals.
ECU has one final event left on it's fall schedule. The Pirates are scheduled to compete at the UNCW Fall Hidden Duals in Wilmington starting on Friday, Nov. 2.
