
ECU Tabbed With No. 7 Seed For The American Championships

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The American Athletic Conference announced the seeding for the 2018 American Men's Tennis Championship Monday. The ECU men earned the No. 7 seed in the tournament and will face No. 10 seed UConn, which they defeated 5-2 Sunday, in Thursday's opening round at 10 a.m. ET. The winner will advanced to face second-seeded Tulane Friday in the quarterfinals.
The Pirates defeated the Huskies, 4-1, a year ago in the first round of the 2017 conference championship tournament.
The men's championship, which will be held on the campus of SMU in Dallas, runs from April 19-22. The winner will earn The American's automatic bids to the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships.
Competition in the American Athletic Conference Tennis Championships will take place at Turpin Stadium and the Crum Tennis Courts, both on the SMU campus. Each match in the championship will consist of three doubles matches, each consisting of one set to 6, followed by six singles matches, which will be played in a best-of-three-sets format.
Seeds for the championships are determined by the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
The Pirates compiled a 21-4 overall record this season with a 2-0 mark against American Athletic Conference foes Temple and UConn. ECU opened the season with an 8-3 record then won 10 in a row before finishing with three wins in its final four dual matches.
Leading the way for the Pirates in singles is Ronny Georgi and Javier Renones. Georgi compiled an 18-3 individual dual match record with Renones posting an 18-1 singles mark, including a 15-0 mark at the No. 6 position. Kasey Countee and Wisse Jonker each won 17 singles matches this spring.
In doubles play, the Pirates are led by the duo of Renones and Jonker. The pair has a record of 16-2 this season, including a 13-2 mark from the No. 3 position.
