
Women's Tennis Earns No. 8 Seed For AAC Championship

GREENVILLE, N.C. -Â The ECU Women's Tennis team earned the No. 8 seed in the American Athletic Conference tournament and will face No. 9 Tulane in the opening round on Wednesday at noon. The winner will advance to face the No. 1 overall seed UCF, and currently ranked No. 21 in the nation, on Thursday at noon.
The Pirates (17-8, 3-5) and Green Wave (12-10, 1-3) met in regular season play on March 17 in Memphis, Tenn. where Tulane defeated the purple and gold 4-3.
The women's championship, which will be held on the campus of SMU in Dallas, Texas. The opening round begins on April 18 and will conclude with the championship matches on Saturday, April 21. The winner of the tournament will earn The American's automatic bids to the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships.
Competition in the American Athletic Conference Tennis Championships will take place at Turpin Stadium and the Crum Tennis Courts, both on the SMU campus. Each match in the championship will consist of three doubles matches, each consisting of one set to 6, followed by six singles matches, which will be played in a best-of-three-sets format.
Seeds for the championships are determined by the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
The Pirates finished the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and a 3-5 mark in AAC play. ECU will enter the postseason tournament on a five-game winning streak. Tom Morris's club holds a 5-1 record when playing at a neutral location this season.
ECU has been led all season by junior standout Celia Ruiz, who is currently ranked No. 75 in the country by the ITA tennis rankings. Ruiz has recorded a team-high 14 wins in singles competition and 11 total wins in doubles play. Alisa Diercksen, Nastja Retich and Lisa Hofbauer have each compiled 13 wins respectively this season. Freshman Hsia Ho Chiao has added 11 wins in singles play, marking the fifth Pirate to reach doubles figures in wins this season.
In doubles play, Hsia Ho Chiao and Nastja Rettich finished the regular season with a team-best nine wins. Lisa Hofbauer and Celia Ruiz have completed the year with an 8-5 record when paired together in doubles competition.
