
Volleyball Rounds Out 2018 Roster With Pair Of Transfers

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Brianna Hudson and Kalee Vanderhorst have declared their commitments to attend East Carolina University and compete for the Pirate volleyball program beginning in the fall of 2018, according to an announcement Monday by sixth-year head coach Julie Torbett.

Hudson, a 5-6 defensive specialist, played her freshman and sophomore seasons at UTSA while Vanderhorst, a 5-10 outside hitter, spent her initial collegiate campaign on the roster at East Tennessee State University.

- Averaged 1.28 digs per set in 25 matches (90 sets) as a sophomore, including a season-high 17 against UAB.
- Piled up double-digit digs in four matches (17/UAB, 13/FIU, 12/FAU and 10/North Texas).
- Competed in 25 of 28 matches (71 sets) as a true freshman.
- Averaged 0.73 digs per set (52 digs) and added seven service aces (0.10 saps) as well as five assists (0.07 aps).
- Registered a career-best 12 digs in the second match of her collegiate career against SMU.
- Named to the 2016-17 Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
- Tallied 1,041 kills, 1,707 digs and 100 aces in four seasons at Cypress Lakes High School.
- Named twice to the Houston Fab 50 and was a VYPE preseason favorite in 2015.
Coach Torbett on Hudson: "Brianna is a great addition to our program. She was a solid player for UTSA and received great coaching there. Defense is such an important part of our program and we expect that Bri will come in and compete for time in the back row."

- Averaged 1.17 kills and 0.54 blocks per set in 25 matches (81 sets) her freshman season, helping lead ETSU to the Southern Conference tournament title and a NCAA appearance.
- Racked up seven kills and a .467 hitting percentage against Wichita State.
- Tallied nine kills and .444 hitting percentage in 3-0 victory against Virginia.
- Started all three matches for the Bucs in the SoCon Tournament, capping off the championship run with six kills and a .455 hitting percentage.
- Notched six kills versus Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
- AVCA Under Armour High School All-American and Cap-8 4A Conference Player of the Year in 2016.
- Played her first two prep seasons at D.H. Conley High School in Greenville before transferring to Broughton High School for her junior and senior campaigns.
Coach Torbett on Vanderhorst: "I am so happy to have the opportunity to coach Kalee Vanderhorst. I have watched her play for years and I know what she is capable of. She was a contributor to ETSU's championship in the Southern Conference. We are excited she came back home to Greenville. Her parents are both alumni and her father was a standout on our men's basketball team."

ECU produced a 22-11 overall record in 2017, marking the first 20-win season for the program since 2005 as well as the second-most victories in a single season. The Pirates also turned in a 13-7 mark in American Athletic Conference play – finishing fourth in the league standings after being selected 11th of 12 teams in the conference's preseason coaches poll. ECU's incoming recruiting class was honored by PrepVolleyball.com as high honorable mention.
