July 25, 2018 | Women's Golf
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Eleven events, including the Pirate Collegiate Classic, highlight the 2018-19 ECU women's golf schedule head coach Kevin Williams announced Wednesday. The Pirates, who have made eight regionals in the last 10 years (12 in 18 seasons), will host the Pirate Collegiate Classic Sept. 17-18 at the Greenville Country Club.
Â
"We're very excited about our schedule for the upcoming year," Williams said. "It's the most difficult we have faced in the history of our program and we are looking forward to the competition and challenges presented by this schedule."
Â
ECU will open the 2018-19 season playing in the Minnesota Invitational (Sept. 10-11) for the fifth-straight year. The two-day, 54-hole event will be held at the Prestwick Club in Minneapolis, Minn. In 2014, the Pirates won the invitational posting a 54-hole score of 879 and were led by Frida Gustafsson Spang, who claimed individual medalist honors.
Â
Seventeen teams highlight the Pirate Collegiate Classic – an event that Pirates have won seven times in 17 years of hosting including the last three seasons. A year ago, Dorthea Forbrigd and Kate Law finished tied for first with Forbrigd winning her first career event in a playoff. Up next is the Illini Women's Invitational (Oct. 8-9), which will be played at Medinah No. 2 in Chicago, Ill.
Â
Rounding out the fall portion of ECU's schedule is another return trip to Louisville, Ky. (Cardinal Cup, Oct. 20-21) and Atlanta, Ga. (Alexa Stirling Women's Invitational, Oct. 26-28). The Pirates finished tied for fourth out of 15 teams at the Cardinal Cup in 2018 posting a score of 895.
Â
The spring schedule begins with the UCF Challenge (Feb. 3-5) at the Eagle Creek Golf Club, which marks the ninth time in the last 10 years the Pirates have participated in the annual event with their best finish coming in the spring of 2018 (second place). For the second consecutive year, ECU will play in the Lady Puerto Rio Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club (Feb. 10-12).
Â
ECU will travel to Gainesville, Fla. (March 9-10) to play in the SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational before making trips to Charleston, S.C. (Briar's Creek Invitational, March 18-19) and Greensboro (Bryan National Collegiate Classic, March 19-31) to close out the regular season.
Â
Postseason action gets underway with the American Athletic Conference Championships (April 14-16) and will be played at Hammock Beach in Palm Coast, Fla. This NCAA Championships will be held from May 17-22 at The Blessings in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Pirates return seven golfers from last year's NCAA Austin Regional club where four appeared in at least 10 events. All-AAC selections Carley Cox (senior) and Forbrigd (junior) are two of six upperclassmen on the roster and are joined by Catherine Ashworth (senior), Law (senior), Siranon Shoomee (junior) and Grace Yatawara (junior). Rounding out the squad is sophomore and 2018 AAC Freshman-of-the-Year Kathryn Carson.
