Jayda Hylton-Pelaia Named AAC Defensive Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Â After a strong 1-0-1 start to the season for the ECU women's soccer team, the Pirates earned a pair of honors as Jayda Hylton-Pelaia was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced by league officials on Monday afternoon. Also earning a weekly honor from the conference was Courtney Cash, who was named to the AAC weekly honor roll.

Hylton-Pelaia played 186 minutes in ECU's two games last week, including all 110 in a 1-1 draw at Old Dominion. After giving up a goal and losing a player to a red card all within the first 15 minutes, the junior from Brampton, Ontario helped hold Old Dominion scoreless the rest of the way. Hylton-Pelaia made a key contribution to keep the game tied, sliding to block a Monarch shot in the second overtime period.

Hylton-Pelaia played 72 minutes in the 5-1 win over Radford on Sunday and picked up her first point of her collegiate career when she tallied an assist on Cash's goal. She also earned the penalty kick that Carsen Parker converted for ECU's fourth goal of the day. Hylton-Pelaia becomes the first Pirate to be named AAC Defensive Player of the Week since Kim Sanford earned the honor on Sept. 18, 2017.

"Jayda was fantastic on both nights," said head coach Jason Hamilton. "Coming off playing 110 minutes against Old Dominion while a player down to give us another 72 minutes on Sunday was key to our success. Having her out there to help the younger players is so valuable. She earned a penalty and assisted on the third goal, giving us added offense from the back line."

Cash finished the week with three points after scoring a goal and adding an assist against Radford. Cash had an assist on Grace Doran's goal against the Highlanders and added a goal of her own, all in the first half. Although she did not get on the scoresheet against Old Dominion, she still had a large impact on the proceedings, playing all 110 minutes and drawing a penalty kick for the Pirates.

"Cash has been fantastic throughout the preseason and the first two games," Hamilton said. "Unbelievable work rate from her each game. She is confident and enjoying the team she has around her this season."

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday evening when they travel to NC State for a 7:00 p.m. match.
