ECU Places Seventh At OTC Collegiate Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.— Junior Patrick Stephenson shot a 54-hole total of 4-under-par 206 (69-68-69) to lead ECU to a seventh-place finish in the inaugural Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Wake Forest University, which concluded Tuesday at the Old Town Club.
As a team, the Pirates finished with a two-day score of 5-under-par 835 (285-277-273), finishing 25 strokes behind tournament winner Louisville, which finished at 30-under-par 810 (273-269-268). The Cardinals edged the host Demon Deacons by one stroke for victory.
"Our first round score had us down the leaderboard and it was good to see the guys fight back in round two to move up," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp. "Today we were on the cusp of shooting a great round, but we were not able to move up."
Stephenson shot under-par each round and finished tied for 12th-place.
Junior Blake Taylor carded a three round total of 3-under-par 208 (71-67-70), which included a career-low second round with two eagles to finish tied for 20th. Freshman A.J. Beechler also placed among the top-30, tying for 29th at 1-over-par 211 (68-71-72) after carding the lowest 18-hole score of his young career in round one.
Sophomore Stephen Carroll fired a 2-over-par 212 (77-68-67) to tie for 35th. Sophomore Tim Bunten finished at 14-over-par 224 (77-70-77) and freshman Jack Massei fired a 13-over-par 223 (73-74-76) in his ECU debut.
Louisville's Matthias Schmid claimed medalist honors with a final score of 18-under-par 192 (65-64-63).
ECU returns to action Oct. 6-7 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University.
