Women's Tennis Drops Season Opener At NC State
January 18, 2019 | Women's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. – In the season-opener, the ECU women's tennis team fell to NC State 7-0 on Friday evening in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
"Overall we played hard," said head coach Tom Morris. "We had a few opportunities, which we did not take advantage of. It was clear that we need more match experience."
Coming into Friday, Lisa Hofbauer and Alisa Diercksen had a 7-3 record as a tandem and had moved into the International Tennis Association's (ITA) doubles ranking at No. 49. However, the Pirate duo matched up with a ranked pair for the first time and came up short against NC State's 20th-ranked pairing of Anna Rogers and Alana Smith, falling 6-3. The Wolfpack clinched the doubles point when Liz Noman and Bianca Maldovan closed out a 6-4 win over ECU's Nastja Rettich and Hsia Ho Chiao on court two.
ECU did have a bright spot on court three as freshmen Minette Van Vreden and Martina Paladini-Jennings batted in their first career dual match. Van Vreden and Paladini-Jennings battle NC State's Natalia Nikolopoulou and Amanda Rebol and the duos were tied 5-5 when the Wolfpack clinched the doubles point.
In singles, NC State used victories on courts six, four and one to clinch the match. The Wolfpack added a fifth point when Norman topped Van Vreden 6-3, 6-4 on court three.
With the match clinched, a pair of Pirates continued to push to put a point on the board. On court two, Diercksen took the first set from NC State's 111th-ranked singles player Smith. After Smith answered by winning the second set, the pairing went into a third-set tiebreaker. Diercksen and Smith went back and forth, with no more than a point separating the pair for the first 20 points. Finally, Smith pulled out the win when she clinched the tiebreaker by the score of 13-11.
On court five, a similar story played out. Like Diercksen, Paladini-Jennings won the first set, but Rebol claimed the second set to force another tiebreaker. Again, the tiebreaker went past the customary seven point mark until Rebol finally clinched a 10-8 victory.
ECU will have another stern test on Wednesday, Jan. 23 when the Pirates travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on No. 3 North Carolina. Â
