Women's Tennis Falls At No. 3 North Carolina
January 23, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the second straight road match, the ECU women's tennis team battled but the Pirates were overmatched on Wednesday night, falling to No. 3 North Carolina 7-0 inside the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
"I thought we fought hard," said head coach Tom Morris. "We played very well at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and had points to win both. We started off very well and fought hard in singles. They're a great team and had to play against us. Overall, it was a good match for us to play."
ECU had its chances to clinch the doubles point. The Tar Heels showed their depth by cruising to a 6-0 win on court three. But on the other two courts, ECU was neck and neck with the ACC foe. On court one, ECU's 49th-ranked duo of Lisa Hofbauer and Alisa Diercksen matched up with a ranked tandem for the second straight match. On Wednesday, it was the country's No. 2 pairing of Makenna Jones and Cameron Morra. Hofbauer and Diercksen pushed Jones and Morra to the brink as both pairs were tied at six games apiece. In the tiebreaker the Tar Heel pair pulled away for a 7-6 win to clinch the doubles point. On court two, Nastja Rettich and Hsia Ho Chiao also went into a tiebreaker. The ECU pair were tied with Jessie Aney and Alle Sanford in the extra frame 6-6 when North Carolina clinched the doubles point. On both court one and court two, ECU had a chance to win, but just missed out on winning deuce points.
In singles, the depth of the Tar Heels showed. North Carolina did not drop a set on any of the six courts. ECU's bright spot came in the first set on court one. Hofbauer was matched against UNC's second-ranked Jones and battled in the first set. Hofbauer had the set tied at 4-4 before Jones finally pulled away to win the set. Diercksen and Chaio both won four games in their respective second sets, but neither could claim a set from their opponent.
ECU will have a few weeks before the Pirates return to the court. ECU will next travel to New Orleans, La., to take on American opponents Tulane and Memphis on Feb. 8 and Feb. 9, respectively.
