ECU Heads To Charlotte Invitational
October 10, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The majority of the ECU women's tennis team will return to the courts this weekend when the Pirates take part in the Charlotte Invite.
Â
"The Charlotte invitational will be another great opportunity for our team to gain experience against strong competition in order to prepare for this spring season," said head coach Tom Morris. "We will be making some lineup adjustments based on the Coastal Carolina tournament, and look forward to playing this event."
Â
ECU will have eight players headed to Charlotte for the tournament, the same group that took part in the Coastal Carolina Invite two weeks ago. Nastja Rettich was the standout at the Coastal Carolina tournament, winning all three of her singles matches and going 2-1 in doubles with Michelle Ncube.
Â
Ncube, Hanna Axelsson and Sibel Tanik will all be trying to build upon their ECU debuts. Ncube had the 2-1 doubles mark with Rettich and also held the top spot in the Pirate singles lineup at Coastal, battling to a 1-2 mark. Axelsson and Tanik formed a formidable duo of their own, winning all three matches they played together. Along with her success on the doubles court, Tanik went 2-1 in singles.
Â
Ho Chiao Hsia and Minette Van Vreden both started their fall campaigns slow, going 1-2 in singles and 1-2 as a doubles tandem, but will be trying to find the strong vein of form they had last year. Van Vreden went 17-11 in 2018-19 while Hsia had an 11-9 singles mark.
Â
Rounding out the Pirate lineup will be Sofia Anthony and Victoria Dixon. The junior duo went 1-1 together in doubles play while Anthony also picked up a win on the singles court.Â
Â
ECU will start the tournament with matches against players from Princeton and LIU at 2 p.m., on Friday afternoon. The Pirates will have an afternoon match against opponents from Charleston Southern on Saturday before closing the tournament against host Charlotte at 10 a.m., on Sunday morning. Â
