GREENVILLE, N.C. – After opening the fall season at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer of the ECU women's tennis team will again compete against some of the best collegiate players in the country when they take part in the ITA All-American Championship.
Â
"This is another opportunity for the girls to see what it takes to compete with the best, but also an opportunity to show them that they are not that far off," said associate head coach Kirstin Burgess. "I know they are determined to show their Pirate Pride and will use the matches this weekend to do it."
Â
It will be the third straight season Hofbauer will compete at the All-American Championships after teaming with recent graduate Celia Ruiz in both 2017 and 2018. Hofbauer and Ruiz were playing in the pre-qualifying draw both years while Hofbauer and Diercksen will enter into the qualifying draw, putting the ECU pair just three wins away from a spot in the main bracket.
Â
So far this season, Diercksen and Hofbauer are 2-1 after reaching the quarterfinal of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The Pirate duo beat tandems from Michigan State and LSU before dropping a tight 8-6 match to the No. 18 nationally-ranked pairing of Angela Kulikov and Danielle Wilson from USC. Since Diercksen arrived on campus at the start of the 2017-18 campaign, Diercksen and Hofbauer have gone 25-9 when playing together.
Â
The All-American Championships is one of the top tournaments put on by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Players vie for the title along with securing a place in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships which take place in November. Diercksen will be just the third Pirate to play in the event, joining Ruiz and Hofbauer.
Â
The Pirate pair will start qualifying play on Monday, Oct. 7 in Tulsa, Okla.
