PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. --- The ECU men's golf team opened the spring season with a ninth-place finish at the Sea Best Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University on the Dye's Valley course at TPC at Sawgrass Tuesday.
The Pirates carded a three-round team total of 28-over-par 868 (286-288-294) and were the lone unranked team to place in the Top-10, finishing two strokes ahead of No. 24 UNLV.
"Today we had a great opportunity to beat some ranked teams, and we did beat UNLV, but couldn't pass any others," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "We have just under two weeks to prepare for Puerto Rico and we need to continue to improve over those next two weeks because it will be another strong field."
Florida State, ranked 39th according to Golfstat, won the team title by three strokes over No. 23 North Florida, while Florida's Gordon Neale, FSU's John Park and Jacksonville's Eduardo Carrete tied for medalist honors at 4-under-par 206. Each of the teams that finished in the Top-8 are ranked in Golfstats.com's Top-46.
ECU freshman A.J. Beechler recorded his first career Top-10 finish, tying for seventh at 1-under-par 209 (70-68-71). Beechler was one of 12 players in the field to sink double-digit birdies, making 11. His second round 68 matched his season-low.
Junior Patrick Stephenson posted his third Top-15 finish of the season with a 15th-place finish, carding a 3-over-par 213 (71-72-70). Blake Taylor carded a 54-hole total of 9-over-par 219 (70-74-75) to finish 40th with Stephen Carroll (75-75-79) and Logan Shuping (77-76-76) each shooting 19-over 229 and Tim Bunten firing a 26-over-par 236 (84-74-78).
"A.J. had a wonderful tournament," Sapp said. Â "A top 10 finish on a difficult course in a great field is an excellent start to the spring for him. Patrick, who has been working hard on a swing change had another top 15 finish and played solid the last two days giving him confidence for the future."
The Pirates are off until Feb. 17-19 when they travel to Palmer, Puerto Rico, to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue.
