GREENVILLE, N.C. – One final tuneup for the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships remains for the ECU track and field program and it happens this weekend as the Pirates travel to Liberty University for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational. The meet will be contested Feb. 8-9 at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
Â
Teams scheduled to compete include Appalachian State, Campbell, Charlotte, ECU, Elon, High Point, Liberty, North Carolina A&T, N.C. Central, Pacific, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina.
Â
"We really have to take advantage of this last regular season meet so that we can move up the American Athletic Conference performance list," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "There are still some people that are looking for their best marks of the year up to this point and they have to get it done this weekend. I feel like both teams are in a good place. We are competing with a lot of confidence and energy. We have to go in with the same confidence that we have had in the last three meets. One of the big goals of this meet this weekend is to come out healthy."
Â
Last weekend saw the Pirates split the squad up, participating in the Doc Hale Elite Meet at Virginia Tech and the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem. Sophomore Mackenzie Whitaker posted the fourth-best women's indoor long jump mark in program history, turning in a total of 5.98 meters, while freshman Anna Bristle crossed the finish line in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:43.89 – the second-fastest women's indoor 3,000m showing in school history.
Â
On the AAC performance list, sophomore Sommer Knight is second in the pole vault and senior Grace Sullivan is third in the mile run. Whitaker also checks in third in the long jump. On the men's side, senior Nick Ciaccia leads the league in the 5,000m while senior Evan McCracken is third in the shot put and senior Hakeem Horton ranks fourth in the long jump.
Â
The American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships are scheduled for Feb. 22-23 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
