GREENVILLE, N.C. – After more than three weeks without a home match, the ECU men's tennis team will host Presbyterian on Saturday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
Â
"Presbyterian is always a high-quality match for us," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "It seems like every year it comes down to 4-3 with the last match or two on court deciding everything. This Saturday should be no different. It's important that we take the good things that occurred for us on Wednesday, keep moving in the right direction and not take anything for granted"
Â
ECU (12-4) snapped a two-match losing streak by leaving UNC Greensboro with a 6-1 win. The Pirates used the momentum from the doubles point to help them battle through some tough singles matches. ECU was also buoyed by the return of Diogo Marques who had missed the previous match due to injury.
Â
Marques is tied for the team lead in singles wins, at 18-10. Wisse Jonker also has an 18-9 record and is a team-best 12-4 in dual matches. Javier Renones is right behind the pair, havingracked up a 17-8 overall mark and an 11-1 dual match ledger. Will Bissett (12-7) and Ronny Georgi (11-5) both won their respective matches againsy UNC Greensboro, with Bissett getting the clinching point. Vlad Anghel rounds out the Pirates in double figures, owning a 14-12 mark and a 7-4 record on court two.
Â
In doubles, Jonker and Renones continue to be the top pair for ECU, owning an 8-3 overall record and a 5-1 dual match mark. Austin Allen and Diogo Marques are also 8-3 as a duo and they are 5-0 on court two.
Â
Presbyterian (10-10) started the year 7-1, but has lost nine of the past 12 matches. ECU and Presbyterian have both most recently taken on UNC Greensboro and although ECU beat the Spartans 6-1, the Blue Hose lost to the Spartans by the same score. The Blue Hose are 94-99 overall in singles matches this season and 50-31 in doubles. Nicholas McKinney leads Presbyterian with a 19-7 singles record while Maxwell Benson (16-10) and Oscar Alvarez (17-14) are right behind him. In doubles, Alvarez and Daniel Stenger lead the team with a 13-7 mark as a duo.
Â
First serve is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
