Connecticut Wins Series Opener Over East Carolina, 10-3

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Connecticut hit three home runs and cruised to a 10-3 win over East Carolina to open an American Athletic Conference series Friday night at the ECU Softball Stadium.

The Huskies improve to 17-27 overall and 5-11 in AAC play while the Pirates drop to 21-27 and 3-13.

Olivia Sappington and Kiwi McDaniel notched three hits each while McDaniel scored two runs, drove in three and drew two walks. Tate McClellan was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Marybeth Olson (11-12) went the distance, posting seven strikeouts and allowing three runs on four hits. Erin Poepping (14-17) took the loss, surrendering three runs (two earned) on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Connecticut struck first in the top of the second with a two-run home run off the bat of Maura Glatczak. Chloe Kerns added to the visitors' lead in the top of the third with a RBI single before a run-scoring groundout made it 4-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth.

ECU broke through in the home half of the fourth when Ashleigh Inae led off with a single through the right side and scored on a Rachel McCollum double. McClellan followed with a two-run home run that sliced the Huskies' advantage to 4-3.

The momentum was short lived, however, as a two-run home run by Reese Guevarra extended the Connecticut cushion to 6-3. The Huskies plated four in the top of the seventh off a wild pitch and three-run home run to close the scoring.

The teams will continue the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
