Marques Wins Draw At Liberty Invite

Lynchburg, Va. – The fall season got off to a successful start for the ECU men's tennis team as Diogo Marques won his draw at the Liberty Invitational.

"Winner winner, chicken dinner! Congrats to Diogo for his first tournament win in college," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "He did a great job of hanging in a couple of matches and just competing his butt off in difficult, hot conditions. The end result was a tournament win. Well done."

Marques, who was the fourth seed in the Red Draw, did not have it easy in any of his four matches. The sophomore dropped the first set in each of his three matches and went to a tiebreak in the third set in both the first round and the final. Each time though, Marques battled back, leading to a dramatic 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7) victory against Josh Wilson of Liberty in the final.

Making his ECU debut, Agustin Tamagnone also had a successful weekend, going 3-1 in singles play and winning the consolation half of his draw. Tamagnone dropped his opening match against Ricky Bell of Richmond, but bounced back to win three straight matches, culminating in a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chase Bernstine from Virginia Tech.

Also playing singles this weekend was Simon Labbe, Federico Masetti and Nelson Stafford. Masetti finished the weekend 2-1 before withdrawing from his final match while Labbe and Stafford started the season 1-3.

In doubles, the pairing of Marques and Tamagnone and the duo of Labbe and Masetti each went 2-1. Stafford also got some experience in doubles play as he was paired with Virginia Tech's Chase Berstine and went 1-2.

The Pirates will be back in action this coming weekend when they head to Greensboro for the UNCG Fall Invitational. Play will start on Friday, Sept. 20 and run through Sunday, Sept. 22.
