ECU Heads To UNCG Fall Invitational
September 18, 2019 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After a start to the fall season that included the first trophy, the ECU men's tennis team will have nearly its whole team playing together for the first time when the Pirates head to the UNCG Fall Invitational.
Â
"It will be good to have the whole team together this weekend," said assistant coach Ian Van Cott. "We will play a hidden dual format which is similar to what we will see in the spring. The more competitive situations we put ourselves in this fall will only benefit us once we get into the spring."
Â
Five Pirates have already made their fall debuts, including Diogo Marques. Marques went 4-0 at the Liberty Invitational, winning his first collegiate title. Right behid Marques was Agustin Tamagnone who went 3-1 while Federico Masetti went 2-1. The Pirates also had a solid doubles start, as the duo of Marques and Tamagnone went 2-1 and so did the partnership of Masetti and Simon Labbe.
Â
Competing for the first time this weekend are two veterans and a rookie. The lone senior on the Pirates roster, Javier Renones, returns after leading ECU with a 21-8 record in 2019. Wisse Jonker had a 19-13 record of his own last season. Renones and Jonker combined to form the top ECU doubles tandem last year, going 10-6 together, including 6-3 on court one. Making his collegiate debut will be Daniel Bird, a native of Birmingham, Great Britain.
Â
ECU will start play in Greensboro at 3:30 p.m., when the Pirates match up against USC Upstate in singles matches. ECU will take on host UNCG in doubles at 5 p.m. On Saturday, ECU will have singles rounds against both UNCG and Radford as well as doubles contests against James Madison and USC Upstate. The Invite will come to an end on Sunday with ECU taking on Radford in singles and James Madison in doubles.
