Hofbauer, Diercksen Finish Play At Milwaukee Classic
September 23, 2019 | Women's Tennis
RIVER HILLS, WI. – Playing against a loaded field, Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer of the ECU women's tennis team reached the quarterfinal of the doubles draw at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
Â
"We saw a level of competition that we don't get to see usually," said associate head coach Kirstin Burgess. "But we were able to raise our level of play in doubles. With singles, it looked like it was our first event of the year and we played like it. The girls played hard and found ways to make their matches competitive even when they weren't playing their best."
Â
Diercksen and Hofbauer were playing together for the first time since going 19-6 together during the 2018-19 campaign. The duo opened the tournament against Michigan State's Dagmar Zdrubecka and Tia Mukherjee, winning 8-5. The pair followed it up with a dramatic 9-7 victory over LSU's Nina Geissler and Paris Corley.
Â
The doubles run came to an end in the quarterfinal when Hofbauer and Diercksen battled against the No. 18 duo in the country, Angelia Kulikov and Danielle Wilson of Southern California. The Pirate partnership came up just short, falling 8-6 to the Trojan tandem.
Â
In singles, Diercksen fell to Liberty's Kate Popova 7-5, 6-4 while Hofbauer dropped a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) match against May Kimhi of Florida Atlantic to start play.
Â
Dropped into the consolation, Diercksen bounced back by beating Michigan State's Lauren Lemonds 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6). Hofbauer moved on after a walkover win against USC's Ana Neffa.
Â
It took a third set tiebreaker to knock out both Diercksen and Hofbauer in the consolation round of 16. Diercksen took an early lead against Alisha Reayer of Memphis, but Reayer won the second set and the tiebreaker to finish a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) victory. Hofbauer also won the first set, but saw Karolina Snita of Louisiana Monroe win the final two sets for a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) win.
Â
The Pirates will next head to Coastal Carolina for the Coastal Carolina Invite, starting on Friday, Sept. 27.
