Pirates To Play At Coastal Carolina Invite
September 26, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The majority of the ECU women's tennis team will open the fall campaign this weekend when the Pirates travel to the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Â
"We've been working really hard in practice and feel good about the team," said head coach Tom Morris. "This weekend is a great opportunity to see where we are and look at our singles and doubles lineup. It will be really challenging with Coastal Carolina, UNCG and Campbell, all three teams outplayed us last year at the same tournament so we're looking forward to competing. It give us a great chance to see where we are heading into the other fall tournaments."
Â
The fall season officially got underway for ECU last weekend when Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer competed at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, but for the rest of the team, the Coastal Carolina Invite will be their first taste of official competition.
Â
Nastja Rettich will be the most experienced Pirate competing this weekend, having racked up a 21-6 singles mark last season. Minette Van Vreden (17-11) and Ho Chiao Hsia (11-9) will start their 2019-20 campaigns after winning at least 10 singles matches last year. Also returning to the courts will be Sofia Anthony (3-4) and Victoria Dixon (5-3).
Â
Along with the four returners, three newcomers will make their ECU debuts. Michelle Ncube arrived in Greenville after spending her freshman season at Bethune-Cookman. While at Bethune-Cookman, Ncube was named the 2019 MEAC Rookie of the Year and was named to the MEAC All-Conference First-Team after going 11-3 on the top singles court. The sophomore transfer also racked up an 11-6 doubles mark.
Â
Making their collegiate debuts will be Sibel Tanik and Hanna Axelsson. Sibel is a native of Raleigh, N.C., and was one of the top players in the state, reaching No. 3 in the state rankings and finishing as a finalist in the 2018 individual singles championship. Axelsson hails from Lund, Sweden where she reached the semifinals of the 2018 Swedish U18 Championship in both singles and doubles.
Â
Play at the Coastal Carolina Invitational will get started on Friday, Sept. 27 and will run through Saturday, Sept. 28. Â
