Conway, S.C. – The fall season began in earnest for the ECU women's tennis team which had eight members compete for the first time at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.

"Overall, I felt we played doubles pretty well, however I am disappointed in our singles results," said head coach Tom Morris. "We fought hard and gave ourselves many opportunities throughout this event and then failed to play the critical points well. I believe we had prepared well, but played very nervous in some matches as we had three players playing their first event as a Pirate. This tournament was an important event to play, showing some areas in which we need work. Congratulations to Nastja Rettich who had a great tournament, winning all three singles matches and two of three in doubles."

ECU had started the fall campaign when Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer played at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, but for the remaining eight Pirates, the Coastal Carolina Invitational represented their first taste of official competition. The most seasoned of those eight, senior Nastja Rettich, led the way by winning all three of her singles matches as well as teaming with Michelle Ncube to win two of three doubles matches.

Ncube was one of three Pirates making her ECU debut, as Sibel Tanik and Hanna Axelsson played their first collegiate matches. Tanik had a solid weekend, winning two of three matches on the singles court and then partnering with Axelsson to win all three doubles matches the duo played together.

Overall, ECU was much more successful on the doubles court, going 7-4 there compared to just 9-13 in singles play.

Next up for the Pirates will be the return of Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer as the pair play in the ITA All-American Championships. Diercksen and Hofbauer will enter in the doubles qualifying draw starting on Monday, Oct. 7 in Tulsa, Okla.
