Pirates Dismantle UNC Asheville 6-1
January 26, 2020 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the ECU men's tennis never looked back, beating UNC Asheville 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
"First of all, a big thank you to everyone that came out today, including our women's team," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "We had a great atmosphere indoors today and that certainly helped our guys be locked in right from the start. We lost to them last year in a super close match and I think that helped motivate us to play well and stay focused. Congrats to Agustin (Tamagnone) in clinching our win, his first as a Pirate."Â
ECU improves to 2-0 on the young season while UNC Asheville is 1-1.
Last season, ECU fell behind UNC Asheville 4-0 and although the Pirates scored the last three points of that match, it was too late. This year though, ECU made sure to reverse that script.
In doubles, Simon Labbe and Agustin Tamagnone continued their strong play from the fall, topping Charlie Morkel and Edward Colclough 6-1. Labbe and Tamagnone are now 5-1 when playing together.
ECU led on both of the remaining doubles courts, but it was Diogo Marques and Federico Masetti who got the clinching win. Marques and Masetti won their second match of the weekend, dropping Sira Daosaengsawang and Quinn Fender 6-3 on court three.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles, the top two players from the Pirates helped them take an insurmountable lead. Marques continued his undefeated start to his sophomore campaign, topping Morkel 6-2, 6-2 on court one. The Setubal, Portugal native is now a perfect 10-0 in singles this year.
Renones was not very far behind him. The senior beat Daosaengsawang 6-2, 6-2 on court two to put ECU one win away from clinching.
The celebration was momentarily postponed though. On court three, Labbe led Bierbaum 5-4 in each of the first two sets, but could not close either out and Bierbaum was able to win 7-5, 7-5 to put UNC Asheville on the board.
The clinching point came soon after when Tamagnone beat Thursfield 6-1, 6-4 on court four.
Jonker got his second singles win of the weekend on court five, beating Colclough 6-2, 6-3.
The most exciting match of the day, and the only one to go to three sets, was the last to get started. In a back and forth first set, Masetti led Fender 5-4, but Fender won three straight games to take the opening stanza. Masetti responded with a perfect second set, winning six straight games against Fender. Heading into the third set tiebreaker with all of the momentum, Masetti won the first five points and eventually prevailed 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-5).
The Pirates will be back home next Friday when they host Navy at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
