ECU Stays Undefeated At Home With 5-2 Win
February 21, 2020 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Dominance at the bottom of the lineup helped the ECU men's tennis team top Bryant 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
"It never seems to be easy, but the end goal is to find a way to win and today we did that," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "We went in phases during doubles where I thought we were coming together and then we find a way to come apart. But ultimately winning the doubles made a big difference. Bryant's top singles guys played great and really took it to us in those spots, which does not happen to us a lot. That made things a lot tighter going into four, five and six singles, but those guys played great for us today. Congrats to Wisse (Jonker) for getting the clinching point."
ECU improves to 8-2 and a perfect 6-0 at home while Bryant is now 6-12.
The Pirates took an early lead by winning the doubles point. Wisse Jonker and Javier Renones beat Wilson Dong and Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia 6-3 on court two. On court three, Diogo Marques and Federico Masetti had an early lead, but Bryant's Grant Pertile and Alexander Schou came back to force a tiebreaker. Marques and Masetti recovered to take an early lead in the tiebreak and never looked back, winning 7-6 (7-2).
ECU got another point early in the singles play. Simon Labbe topped Ortiz-Garcia 6-2, 6-4 on court three to put ECU up 2-0.
However, the momentum turned towards Bryant briefly. Guido Argentini beat Javier Renones 6-0, 6-2 on court two and then Dong topped Marques 7-5, 6-2 on court one to tie the match at 2-2.
With the last three matches taking the court, each team needed two of them to clinch the win. The Pirates slowed Bryant's momentum by winning the first set on all three of those courts.
Agustin Tamagnone put ECU back on top by finishing off a 6-1, 6-3 win over Schou on court four. The match was clinched when Jonker beat Trent Massam 6-4, 6-2 on court five. ECU added another point with Masetti beating Andrew Pregel 6-0, 7-5 on court six.
The Pirates will play a second home match this weekend. ECU will take on Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
