"We are looking forward to getting to compete against a conference opponent again," said head coach Jason Hamilton. "We have had a great week in training and the team looks ready."
Â
ECU (1-2, 1-0) struggled in its final nonconference game, falling to VCU 3-1. Morgan Dewey got the only goal of the day for ECU and leads the Pirates with three points on one goal and one assist. ECU is one of four AAC teams yet to lose in conference play after beating Houston in overtime.
Â
"I think we were all a little disappointed with our performance last weekend and we didn't do well competing," Hamilton said. "This being a game with so much more meaning, it forces us to come out as it did with Houston."
Â
Maeve English ranks second in the conference in saves, with 10 in her first three games. English and Dewey have each been honored by the AAC, with English earning AAC Goalkeeper of the Week after shutting out Houston while Dewey was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll after scoring against VCU. Carsen Parker has also been honored this season, earning AAC Defensive Player of the Week after she scored the game-winning goal off a corner from Dewey against Houston. As a team, ECU is in the top-100 in the country in corner kicks per game, averaging 4.67.
Â
Temple (1-2, 0-2 AAC) has been the opposite of the Pirates so far, winning its only nonconference game when the Owls beat Villanova 3-0, but have dropped a pair of contests against AAC opponents. Temple fell at home to UCF 3-0 to start the year before losing 2-0 at USF last Sunday. Kamryn Stablein has been busy in goal for the Owls, making 26 saves in three games which leads the conference by a large margin. Emily Kavanaugh leads the team with a goal and an assist while Hailey Gutowski and Emma Wilkins have each scored one goal.
Â
"Temple is very organized and hard to break down," Hamilton added. "We will have to be patient and do a good job of taking care of the ball. Defensively, we have to work hard the second we lose the ball as they will like to attack and get forward quickly."
Â
It will be the second straight season ECU plays at Temple. Last season, the Owls scored in the 96th minute to take a 1-0 overtime win. ECU still holds a slight 3-2-1 lead in the series against Temple, but has never won in Philadelphia. The Pirates lost 1-0 in 2017 as well while tying 0-0 in 2015. Not only would a win break that streak, it would also give ECU a 2-0 AAC record for the first time since joining the conference in 2014 and it would be the first time the Pirates started 2-0 in conference play since doing so in Conference USA in 2012. Â
Â
The Pirates and the Owls will square off at 1 p.m., at the Temple Sports Complex. The game can be seen on ESPN+.
