Pirates Dropped At Temple
April 16, 2021 | Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA, PA . – A long scoring drought was the difference as the East Carolina lacrosse team fell to Temple 13-7 on Friday afternoon.
ECU falls to 3-10 on the season with a 1-6 AAC mark while the Owls clinch a spot in the AAC Championship and now have a 9-4 overall ledger and a 5-2 league record.
The Pirates were right with the Owls in the early going. It took nearly 10 minutes for ECU to get on the scoreboard, but Temple could only muster one goal of its own in that span, with Meghan Hoffman setting up Abaigeal Ryan. Nicole LeGar got the Pirates on the board when she scored off a flip pass by Elizabeth Wilson.
Temple regained the lead just 39 seconds later again through Hoffman assisting Ryan. ECU had an answer with Frances Kimel scoring her first goal of the day, making it 2-2 with 16:19 remaining in the opening half.
Unfortunately for the Pirates, the Temple defense clamped down the rest of the half. The Owls finished the opening stanza on a 6-0 run, powered by Bridget Whitaker's three goals and three more assists for Hoffman. That made it 8-2 midway through the game.
ECU's scoreless stretch continued into the second half, with Temple adding another goal to make it 9-2. The run finally came to an end with 21:50 remaining as Camryn Pennypacker scored for ECU.
Hoffman answered for Temple once again, setting up two more Owl goals to push the lead to 11-2, the largest of the game.
Despite the deficit, the Pirates began to claw back into the game. Payton Barr scored off a feed from Megan Pallozzi and Kimel followed that up with her second goal of the day. After a Temple goal, Kimel closed out her hat trick by bouncing in a free-position shot.
The two teams traded goals over the final five minutes, with Bridget Whitaker scoring for Temple while Megan Tryniski scored on an individual effort for ECU.
Temple finished with a 32-27 edge in shots and a 16-6 lead in draw controls. The Pirates held a slight 24-21 advantage in ground balls while both teams caused 15 turnovers.
Kimel was the only Pirate with multiple points, pouring in those three goals. Pennypacker led ECU with four draw controls while LeGar had a team-high five ground balls. Carli Johnston and Alexandra Giacolone forced three and two turnovers respectively. In the goal, Ashley Vernon finished with 11 stops for the Pirates.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday morning. That game will get started at 11 a.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
